PHYSICAL & OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF FUSED QUARTZ

Fused quartz is made by electrically fusing or gas-oxygen flame fusing of pure natural quartz crystal. Fused quartz maintains the following characteristics:

  • thermally stable with a low coefficient of linear expansion
  • high working temperature
  • good for transmission from the near UV to the near IR
  • standard optical fabrication techniques can be used to polish it



FUSED QUARTZ IS USED IN A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS CONFIGURATIONS

Fused quartz has a range of uses, including:

  • standard optical components
  • tubing and glassware for chemistry
  • flash tubes
  • test flats
  • view port windows, pressure windows
  • telescope mirrors, and optical component mirrors
  • vacuum chucks
